Efforts by Tema Assembly to prevent littering of streets

Tema, Dec. 12, GNA-- The Waste Management Department of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, has instituted measures to prosecute passengers, drivers and driver's mates who would be caught throwing rubbish from vehicles.

Mr Mohammed Abdulai, head of the Waste Management Department of the Assembly, said the measure would help in keeping the streets clean. He said these when the Zoomlion Ghana Limited presented 50 plastic litter bins valued 6,000 Ghana Cedis to the Department for distribution to the lorry parks in the Metropolis, at Tema on Wednesday. Mr Abdulai advised drivers to provide litterbins in their vehicles and asked passengers to either put waste materials in their bags or in vehicles when there are no litterbins instead of throwing them unto the streets.

He further urged the public to desist from dumping refuse in water ways or gutters since that could lead to flooding during the rainy season.

Mr David Quaye Annang, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, who received the containers urged drivers to educate passengers on the need to keep the environment clean.

Mr Samuel Sakyi-Asirifi, a Supervisor of Zoomlion, presenting the containers, said the donation formed part of the company's national campaign to keep the country especially the lorry parks clean. Mr Sakyi-Asirifi said the company would be responsible for the daily empting of the containers.

He said apart from donating containers to all municipal assemblies nationwide, the company was also educating the public on the importance of keeping the environment clean. 12 Dec 07
