Educationist appeals for more teachers

Ajumako (C/R), Dec 16, GNA - Mr Peter W. Drofenu, the District Director of Education, has said the district would need more teachers to cope with the massive increase in pupils' intake following the release of the capitation grant.

He told the GNA in an interview that enrolment had risen from 23,000 to 28,000 and the district would need not less than 150 teachers. ''Now, there is a shortage of teachers in the district and this is affecting teaching and learning. This is in addition to office accommodation, staff bungalows, furniture and stationary.''

Mr Drofenu said an office block that was started under PIP/NEPAD programme had been abandoned since 1999 and called on the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District Assembly and the Regional Directorate of the GES to help bring the contractor back to site.

He said the cost of renting premises for offices continues to rise year after year.
