E/R schools benefit from Total road safety campaign

The Eastern Region of Ghana has recorded the highest number of beneficiaries of the Total Safety Cube Project, according to a statement from Total Ghana.

This follows a successful launch of the project in the Greater Accra, Ashanti and Volta Regions.

The Eastern Region covers a vast territory and noted for its forests, mountainous terrain and steep roads, which makes it a challenge for road users and commuters, especially children, who live in these areas.

Stories have been told of children in the municipality and along the various highways encountering road accidents, sometimes leading to fatalities.

It is within this context that the Total Safety Cube was launched using fun and practical materials to educate children about road safety.

The children were taught through group discussions, completing activities in students’ workbooks and games to reinforce the lessons.

The campaign focused on three themes: Learning the rules of the road; moving around safely; and protecting yourself at all times.

The Safety Cube benefitted approximately 5,500 school children from 13 basic schools in Somanya, Adukrom, Adawso and the Koforidua townships.

The Ghana National Road Safety Commission was present to add some weight to the programme.

Visual aids depicting specific behaviours to adopt when using the road and their importance were applied to effectively appeal to the many school children, who had thronged the various assembly grounds.

The children mapped out routes they take from their schools to their homes with the materials from the cube, identifying the dangers on their roads from home to school and vice versa and how to overcome these dangers.

The Total Safety Cube was distributed to the schools to form road safety clubs and to ensure the continuity of creating awareness amongst peers in the various communities.
