Dual desks left to rot at GES office

Nkwanta, (V/R), May 2, GNA- A total of 300 partially completed dual desks for schools in Nkwanta and Brewniase in the Nkwanta District of the Volta Region are rotting away on the premises of the District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) at Nkwanta. When the GNA sought explanation from the District Directorate of the GES on the matter, Reverend Ernest Gaewu, District Director of Education, blamed JENWAC Company Limited of Kumasi for failing to complete work on the desks and deliver them to the directorate. He said JENWAC Company Limited and Openway Company Limited also of Kumasi were contracted to supply a total of 3,000 dual desks to schools in Kpassa, Brewniase and Nkwanta by November 2006.

He said Openway Company Limited fulfilled its part of the contract by supplying 1,000 dual desks to the directorate.

Rev. Gaewu said JENWAC Company limited supplied 1,700 of the furniture out of the 2,000 it should have supplied and allegedly dumped the remaining 300 partially completed desks on the premises of the GES. The District Director of Education appealed to the relevant authorities to help locate the company since he had made several efforts to contact the Company to rectify the anomaly to no avail.

Rev. Gaewu also suggested that contract for the supply of 300 teachers' classroom tables and chairs be given to suppliers in the locality to make for easier contact and monitoring.

He said when that approach was used under a British Department For International Development (DFID) project in 2002 and 2003, a total of 681 dual desks, 165 tables and 120 chairs of high quality were supplied on time to the Directorate.
