The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), in collaboration with safety agencies like the Ghana Red Cross Society, the Police and Fire services have organized a one-day sensitization programme for drivers in Tarkwa on how to observe road safety measures during the Christmas festivities.

The programme was attended by drivers operating at the Tarkwa including members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

Addressing the drivers at the Tarkwa Lorry Park, the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal National Road Safety Committee Chairman, Mr. Lawrence Adom, said the programme was held annually because of the excessive speeding during the Christmas festivity.

He said during Christmas drivers drank and neglected safe practices and appealed to them to refrain from these negative practices to avoid accidents.

Mr Adom said the road safety committee; Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority together with the police would go on regular road checks to get hold of recalcitrant drivers.

An expert in first aid, Mr. Stephen Armoh, said mishandling of accident victims contributed to the high percentage of deaths of accident victims.
