Don't stay on the sidelines - DCE

Akorabuokrom (Ash) May 3, GNA - Mrs. Thresah Adomako Tawiah, Atwima-Mponua District Chief Executive, has said Ghana's goal of achieving middle income status would be a mirage if the people remained uninformed and kept on the sidelines of the political governance. "If our democracy is to take firm roots and become meaningful, citizens' participation in governance needs to be entrenched" Mrs. Tawiah was speaking at the launch of a constitution week celebration at Akorabuokrom.

"Enhancing constitutionalism through effective citizens' participation for good governance" was the theme. The DCE said the people needed to be encouraged and assisted to input into the economic and political direction of the country. Mrs. Tawiah described the theme for the celebration as "very appropriate" and expressed the determination of the Mills Administration to actively engage the people to deepen governance in the country. She urged the people in the area, especially women, to take keen interest in the forth coming District Assembly and Unit Committee elections and put themselves up as candidates. Mr. Emmanuel Duah Atobrah, the District Director of NCCE, spoke of the need for all to shake off apathy and take part in decisions on community development programmes that directly affected their welfare. 3 May 10
