District Assembly pays part of debt

The Wenchi District Assembly paid a total of 1.359 billion cedis between 2001 and 2002 out of a debt of 1.536 billion cedis bequeathed to it by the previous administration.

Mr Joe Danquah, District Chief Executive disclosed this at a People's Assembly at Wenchi on Friday.

He said the Assembly had completed an irrigation dam at the cost of 352 million cedis at Degedege, near Seikwa in the Wenchi West constituency.

The Village Infrastructural Project (VIP) bore 90 percent and the Assembly 10 percent of the cost of the project, which will boost farming activities and create employment for the youth.

The DCE said it would soon be inaugurated and handed over to the community.

Mr Danquah said between 2001 and 2002, the Assembly disbursed 63.650 million cedis to 243 students from the district in second-cycle and tertiary institutions, adding that students in training colleges formed the greatest percentage among the beneficiaries.
