District Assemblies to manage feeder roads

Begoro, Sept 22, GNA - The government plans to cede the management of feeder roads to district assemblies to facilitate the improvement of the agricultural sector.

This would require district assemblies to purchase their own earth moving equipment to improve works on the roads, especially those mainly used for the transportation of farm produce. The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, made this known when he inaugurated a six-unit classroom block at Dua Police, near Begoro and an earth moving equipment (grader) for the Fanteakwa District.

The grader was purchased by the assembly at the cost of GHC230,000 while the School block was built by the European Union (EU) Micro Projects at a cost of GHC50,000. He said government recognized the problems of farmers in the transportation of their farm produce, which often got stuck because of the bad nature of the roads.

He expressed the hope that the arrangement would minimize the problem.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo told the gathering that fulfilling the campaign promises for a better Ghana was the preoccupation of President John Evans Atta Mills and assured called for patience and hard work on the part of everyone.

The Fanteakwa District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Fuseini Sbaabe, said the grader apart from improving the feeder roads in the area would also generate additional income for the assembly.
