Disregard claims on Oti Region discourse - EP Church Ghana tells public

According to the Rev. Amey, the EPCG has never been involved in any separatist agitation According to the Rev. Amey, the EPCG has never been involved in any separatist agitation

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG) has disassociated itself from alleged discussions regarding the proposed creation of the new Oti region in Ghana by a group known as the Joint Consultative Committee of the Oti Movement.

Rev. Dr. E.K Amey, Clerk of the General Assembly of the Church in a press statement noted that, “since its establishment, the EPCG is being guided by a strict policy of zero political involvement. Our ultimate focus for existence is to propagate the gospel of Christ and contribute to the socio-developmental growth of the country.

Any allegation of a political discourse on the creation of the Oti region against the church is false and should be utterly disregarded by the general public”. He added that, since 1847 when the Church was founded in Ghana, it continues to train its membership solely to be true stewards of Christ Jesus.

In a bid to serve humanity, the Church has in place the Evangelical Presbyterian Development and Relief Agency (EPDRA), a non-governmental body which seeks to empower the poor and vulnerable in society and improve livelihoods through capacity building, sound environmental and health practices while promoting the gospel.

He noted that, “the Church actively augments government initiatives and social interventions in the areas of health and education through the establishment of several primary, junior and senior high schools, teacher training colleges, a university, hospitals and health centres spread across various regions in the country. These non-profit making projects remain the core mandate of its operations”.

He emphasised that, the EPCG has never been involved in any separatist agitation for a sovereign state for the Volta Region to be named Western Togoland.

With reference to the two pastors allegedly mentioned in the statement as those assigned to spearhead campaign against the creation of the Oti Region - Daniel Gator and Daniel Yevugah, he stressed that they are not members of the EPCG.

Reacting to the supposed involvement of a former moderator of the church in activities of the Western Togoland cause, the Very Rev J. Y. Ledo, Rev. Dr Amey explained that, the EPCG has not given him any mandate to act or speak on its behalf regarding the subject matter and cannot react to his involvement or otherwise until due investigation about the issue is concluded.

The Clerk of the General Assembly pointed out that the EPCG, as a member of the Christian Council of Ghana maintains a politically neutral stance in its service to humanity in all circumstances.

“The peace and stability of the country is paramount to the Church thus the leadership entreats the media to be circumspect with their reportage on the story” – Rev. Dr. Amey added.

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana is a product of missionary efforts of the Bremen Mission founded in 1847.

The Church seeks to holistically propagate the gospel by empowering members spiritually, materially and socio-culturally to be effective agents of the Great Commission in a self-sustaining way.
