Deprived districts reminded to disburse GETFund scholarship grant

Accra, Aug. 26, GNA - The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MOEYS) has reminded District Directorates of Education to disburse the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) grant allocated to them for scholarships for pupils and students in basic schools.

The Ministry in a statement signed on Thursday by Mr Dan Osman, Public Relations Officer, reminded them to disburse the amount immediately to enable beneficiaries to enjoy the facility as schools prepared to reopen for the 2004/2005 academic year.

The Ministry commended the Nkwanta District Directorate of Education in the Volta Region for disbursing the 111.1 million cedis GETFund grant allocated to it.

It particularly commended the Acting Director of Education of the District, Mr Kfo Ayitah, for following the criteria laid down by the Ministry and ensuring that the scholarships went those who deserved it.

The statement said the Ministry was particularly concerned about the inability of the Sandema and Bolgatanga District Directorates to select the beneficiaries when there were many pupils and students in the two districts, who needed the assistance provided by the GETFund. The Board of trustees of the GETFUND in April this year allocated 4.4 billion cedis for scholarships to pupils and students in basic schools in 40 deprived districts.
