Communities urged to protect Monkey sanctuary against bushfires

Nkoranza (B/A), Feb. 13, GNA- Mr. James Osei-Wusu, chairman of Bonte Fire Volunteers Squad in Nkoranza District of Brong Ahafo has appealed to fringe communities of the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary to guard against setting bushfires in the area.

He told Ghana News Agency at Nkoranza that had it not been the early intervention of the people of Bonte, bushfire that swept through parts of the forest at the weekend would have been caused havoc to the sanctuary.

Mr. Osei-Wusu said about a hectare of the forest reserve was destroyed.

Mr. Osei-Wusu asked the people to be vigilant and act as watchdogs to monitor the activities of the people to check disaster. He appealed to Assembly Members, Unit Committees and Nananom to support fire volunteers and to ensure that bushfire offences were not settled at home.

Mr. Osei-Wusu urged farmers who wish to burn their new farmlands to engage the local fire volunteers to guide and assist them in the exercise.
