Communities urged to embark on frequent communal labour

Kissi (C/R), Nov 4, GNA - The Municipal Chief Executive for Komenda-Edina-Eguaafo Abirem (KEEA), The Rev Mrs Veronica Essuman Nelson, on Thursday urged the communities within her municipality to embark on frequent communal labour in order to help prevent disasters or minimize their occurrence.

Mrs Nelson who made the call when she launched a disaster reduction campaign at Kissi in the KEEA municipality of the Central Region, advised market women to always make it a point to put off fire after cooking in the market place, since it could generate massive fire outbreaks, and also urged them to keep the markets clean to prevent the outbreak of communicable diseases.

She advised them to eschew the habit of indiscriminate littering and the dumping of refuse into gutters to ensure smooth passage of water in drains.

She appealed to the public to ensure that they obtained proper building documents from the Assembly before putting up any structures, adding that they should desist from building in water ways. Mrs Nelson also advised them to cultivate the maintenance culture in order to keep their houses in proper shape. The KEEA Municipal NADMO Coordinator, Rev John Prince Mensah, said Kissi was chosen among other towns because the community was a major disaster prone area in the municipality. He said Government had spent thousands of cedis on relief items to support disaster victims in the various communities and pointed out that the monies could have been channelled into other areas of development. Rev Mensah urged all to contribute their quota towards the successful implementation of government policies and programmes in order to make the Better Ghana agenda a reality.
