Comic Relief, UK Support Agbogbloshie

Comic Relief, UK will feature Self-help Initiative Support Services Ghana’s project in Agbogbloshie on Red Nose Day –March 15th, 2013.

1. The community has a large proportion of children who have attained school going age but are out of school.

2. The poor environmental conditions predispose them to ill-health conditions.

3. Although the community is not far from the Korle Bu teaching hospital and Princess Louis Children’s Hospital, they seldom access their services.

4. SISS collaborates with the personnel of Princess Louis Children’s Hospital and Ussher Clinic to provide antenatal and post-natal care for the members of the community and at present the hospital continues to provide this care to the community.

5. SISS has registered 35 women and their children under the National Health Insurance Scheme for free medical care.
6. SISS has also identified some schools in the area where it sends Intern teachers to support the core teaching staff. SISS do not work directly with the local school.
7. SISS supports the local school through SISS interns spending time in the local primary school, helping children with reading and writing.
8. This is of great help as teacher-pupil ratio is about1 to 60 pupils in a classroom.
9. SISS also improves the lives of children in the slum by training mothers to set up small businesses in order to increase their incomes. In this way, SISS improves the lives of children by supporting their mothers to buy healthier foods, medicines, school uniforms and pay school fees.
Self-help Initiative Support Services (SISS), has being working with Comic Relief, UK since 2004, to undertake various projects in Agbogbloshie slum aimed at improving the quality of lives of the people particularly women and youth to receive practical training so they can better themselves, form groups, negotiate for better housing and take part in community improvements. SISS also partners with African Outreach UK (www.african-outreach.org) on these projects.
