Chiefs, others want UEW to use facilities of School of Languages

Winneba, Nov 4, GNA - The Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba, (UEW) has appealed to the government to speed up the process of handing over the infrastructure of the Ghana School of Languages, Ajumako, to the university as a campus. The Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr Emmanuel Kenneth Andoh, said this would enable the Faculty of Ghanaian Languages, which currently is the largest department, to move to its rightful place where there is adequate space for teaching and learning.

Dr Andoh made the appeal at the 14th Congregation of the University, at Winneba, during which 5,439 graduates were awarded certificates, Diplomas and Degrees. The Chairman, who is also the Omanhene of Enyan-Maim Traditional Area, in the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District, said "what is currently happening at the Ajumako Campus is a woeful under-utilization of the available facilities and space, a situation which the country cannot afford." "It is also a bitter disappointment for the Chief and people of the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District who gave up their land for a more productive institution and what are they seeing now"?

He said the people and their chiefs are asking what was preventing the University of Education, Winneba, from taking control of the Ajumako Campus, despite all the assurances and promises given to them by the government. According to him, all the pertinent decisions with the relevant stakeholders had already been taken. In related development, the Ajumako Concerned Citizens Association has also added its voice to calls on the government to make sure that the former School of Languages structures at Ajumako were released to the UEW without further delay. Meanwhile, the Ajumako Traditional Council has also made the same appeal. In a letter to the Ministry of Education, dated September 7, 2009, and signed by the four paramount chiefs of the district, the chiefs stated that, "any further delay to hand over the structure to the UEW may lead to the eruption of serious disturbances which we must try to avoid." 04 Nov.09
