Chief cries over abandoned cocoa roads in E/R

Krontihene of Akyem – Asafo Nana Baah Ammentem has called on President John Mahama to, as a matter of urgency, order the completion of the Adonten – Kukurantumi – Akyem Asafo cocoa roads in the Eastern Region.

Work on that stretch of road has stalled in recent months for no apparent reason.

In a press statement issued yesterday, the chief indicated that motorists plying the road, who were earlier grateful to government, have now been left hugely disappointed.

“Our frustrations keep growing every day as a result of the neglect. We had high hopes when government took the decision to construct the road, but now residents and motorists are disappointed,” the statement stressed.

Nana Baah Ammentem could not fathom why the roads have been abandoned even though parliament has approved the release of $1.8 billion for the construction of roads under the widely publicized “cocoa road project”.

“With parliament’s approval we are tempted to believe that there are enough resources so why would government all of a sudden abandon the project.

“…And we all know the contribution of these cocoa farmers to the country’s economy. It is very significant so government must be serious and provide the necessary resources for the completion of the project,” it added.
