Chief calls for review of unit committees' functions

Pampaso (B/A), May 23, GNA - The Gyaasehene of the Dormaa Traditional Council, Barima Oppong Yaw Boabasa Ababio, has appealed to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment to consider reviewing the functions of unit committees by placing them directly under the supervision of traditional authorities. He said this would stop usurpation among members of the local government sub-structure and enhance development at the community level. Barima Oppong Yaw Boabasa Ababio was delivering an address to welcome the new Municipal Chief Executive to Pampaso near Dormaa Ahenkro where he is the chief.

He said usurpation of traditional powers by some unit committee members who thought their functions extended to the sphere of king making and settlement of land disputes.

Barima Oppong Yaw Boabasa Ababio said some had arrogated to themsleves the prerogative of land distribution and sale of building plots without recourse to traditional authority.

He said unit committees were assuming partisan political positions and that he feared unit committees could polarize communities when governance at the national level changes hands. The Municipal Chief Executive assured the chief that his concerns would be raised at the appropriate quarters for further discussion and action.

He assured the people of Pampaso that the trunk road linking Kyeremasu to Gambia Number Two would soon be tarred.
