Central Region records 206 accident deaths last year

A total of 206 persons died through road crashes in the Central Region last year as against 287 in 2013, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has revealed.

The figure was made up of 169 males and 36 females.

Chief Superintendent of Police Felix Kwesi Cosmos of the Cape Coast MTTD who made this known to Ghana News Agency indicated that a total of 1,037 road crashes were recorded last year as against 1,162 the previous year, indicating a decline of 125 cases.

He revealed that a total of 134 of the cases were fatal, 333 were serious while 570 were minor cases.

A total of 1,191 people were injured and 264 pedestrians were knocked down, he stated.

The road crashes involved 715 commercial and 618 private vehicles and 144 motorbikes.

Chief Superintendent Cosmos attributed the decline in road carnage to the numerous educational campaigns undertaken by the department and the effective cooperation among stakeholders.

He gave the assurance that the department would double its efforts this year through rigorous educational and awareness creation campaigns to enlighten the public and intensify enforcement of laws to reduce the clashes further.

Chief Superintendent Cosmos called on drivers, passengers, pedestrian and other road users to be cautious when using the road.
