Cashew farmers form association

Wenchi (B/A), Feb. 21, GNA - About 11,000 cashew farmers in the Wenchi District of Brong Ahafo have formed an association to share ideas and to seek support from government to enhance their activities. The association has Mr Kwaku Adu as Chairman, Mr Abdul Rahaman Gariba, Vice Chairman, Mr King Yab, Secretary, Mr Abdul Fatao, Assistant Secretary and Alhaji Ahmed, Treasurer.

Mr Adu noted that more people were cultivating the crop in the district, which and had helped to improve their economic activities. Mr Adu, who is also member of the National Steering Committee of cashew farmers announced that the committee was liaising with the government to set up a purchasing company for the produce to ensure a stable price and a ready market.

He commended the agricultural extension officers for paying regular visits to the farmers and offering them the necessary technical advice to boost productivity.

Mr Adu expressed gratitude to the management of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), for offering the farmers credit facilities for the management and expansion of their farms. Mr Yab said an American volunteer farmer and expert in cashew production would arrive in the country in March to offer the farmers the necessary advice for the promotion of the cultivation of the crop nationwide. He urged the youth to go into the cultivation of the crop, which he described as a very viable project to improve their living standards.
