CBO launches AIDS Campaign at Chiana

Chiana (U/E), Aug. 25, GNA - The Kassena-Nankana District Assembly has withheld funds meant for HIV/AIDS campaign for the Katiu Youth Association for its inability to fulfil requirements regarding the release of funds from the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC). The assembly has given the Association, one of eight Community Based Organisations (CBOs) selected to undertake the AIDS campaign activities, a deadline to streamline it's activities in order to benefit from the fund.

Mr George Dan-Yari, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kassena-Nankana, said this at Chiana at the weekend at a ceremony to launch the activities of the Chiana AIDS Crusade (CAC), one of the beneficiary CBOs of the GAC fund.

He said the Assembly has so far disbursed about 109 million cedis out of the 120 million from GAC to seven CBOs. Mr Dan-Yari condemned CBOs that do not have the capacity to perform but manage to benefit from facilities meant for a serious national exercise such as the AIDS campaign.

"It is detestable that some organizations should take undue advantage of the plight of AIDS victims to enrich themselves." The Chairman of CAC, Mr Suntuah Niagia, said his outfit aims at taking the campaign to the door steps of the people by emphasizing on the need for change of attitude as the surest way to avoid contracting the disease.

The Paramount Chief of Chiana, Pe Roland Ayagitam 11, called on the youth to abstain from sex to avoid contracting the disease.
