C/R Police Commander worried about spate of road accidents

Cape Coast, Oct. 10, GNA - The Central Regional Police Commander, Mr Bernard Guyiri Dery on Thursday expressed concern about the numerous road accidents recorded on the Mallam - Yamoransa - Takoradi Highway. He said more than six accidents are recorded daily, due to indiscipline behaviour like drunk driving and speeding.

Mr Dery expressed this concern, at his maiden meeting with the leadership of the Cape Coast branch of the Ghana private Road transport Union (GPRTU) in Cape Coast, to deliberate on how best to reduce the accidents and ensure road safety.

The Commander said he was unhappy with the way 'floating drivers' competed on the road for passengers, stressing that such behaviour usually resulted in fatal accidents and called on the Union to help the Police to check the activities of such drivers.

Mr Dery reminded them that it was also an offence punishable by law, for a driver to be speaking on a mobile phone while driving and said the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) would soon embark on regular road checks to arrest drivers who would flout traffic regulations.

He announced that the MTTU would organise workshops for drivers on 'safe driving and traffic regulations' before the end of the year and urged them to ensure that all documents covering vehicles under the Union were always in order.

Touching on crime, he urged members of the Union to help arrest armed robbers, as most of them hired taxis and other commercial vehicles for their operations and announced that neighbourhood watch committees would also be revived in the Region to help to combat crime. Mr Bright Nyanful, Regional Secretary of GPRTU, on behalf of his colleagues pledged their support and cooperation.
