Brazilian contractors want to rebuild K’si Central Market

Contractors from Brazil have expressed interest in reconstructing the Kumasi Central Market, an official of the local government has told TV3.

Regarded as the largest and biggest open-market in West Africa, the Kumasi Central Market in Kejetia has suffered two fire disasters within a year, making the need for redevelopment more urgent, the official added.

“Everybody who visits the Kumasi Central Market will confirm that there is a need for redevelopment,” observed Godwin Nyame, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).

The latest disaster occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when over 100 stalls were razed down.

Most of the structures ravaged in the inferno are said to have been illegally erected.

“Recently, we sent a message through the market manager that all illegal structures be removed,” Mr Nyame revealed.

He warned that worse disasters could befall the market if the Assembly does not act in time.

“We are all aware that currently there is a Brazilian contractor that has expressed interest in reconstructing the market,” he indicated, assuring that original traders will be made to occupy the stalls first after reconstruction.
