Bolgatanga SHS confronted with accommodation problems

The Bolgatanga Senior High School, popularly known as “Big Boss” in the Upper East Region is confronted with the problem of admitting first year students in the 2012-2013 academic years due to the lack of classrooms.

The School was expected to admit new students whose results have just been released from basic schools this September, but due to the unavailability of classrooms, admitting new students has been challenging.

Mr. Atelibiik Ababu, the Headmaster of the School, said this to the Ghana News Agency during the School’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meeting held at the weekend at the school’s premises.

He said in previous years, due to the increased demand for school placement, some students had been made to use the school’s Assembly Hall as their residence and that this year the school was not prepared to admit new entrants with no appropriate accommodation and had tasked the PTA to see how best they could get temporal structures, to house the new students while they waited for government to respond to the school’s needs.

Mr. Ababu said teachers in the school were also confronted with accommodation problems and that two of them had to pair in a two-bedroom quarters and this made it difficult for them to prepare lesson notes and schemes of work effectively.

He said the form three students and form four students nationwide would be writing the same final examination next year and plans were far advanced to make the third year students stay on campus during this term’s vacation, for holiday classes to be organized by the school.

The Headmaster said the School and the PTA had agreed to levy each student GH¢75 to enable the school execute the task efficiently, saying part of the money would be used to prepare meals for the students.

He said the students with the support from the Environmental Protection Agency were embarking on a tree planting and landscaping activities to beautify the school and to serve as windbreak.**
