The Bole District Assembly has started distributing Orange Flesh Sweet Potato vines to farmers in the area as part of efforts to promote the cultivation and consumption of the crop, which is believed to be of high nutritional value.

The orange flesh sweet potato is high in vitamin A and is seen by nutritionists as key to reducing vitamin A deficiency among children in rural Ghana in particular.

Vitamin A deficiency has been identified causes night blindness and weakens immunity among other health challenges.

The late former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan promoted the cultivation and promotion of the crop in the Northern Region.

The Bole Assembly has taken a step further to support farmers in the area to adopt the crop.

The District Chief Executive Veronica Alele Heming this week, led a team of personnel from the assembly including the District Director of Agriculture Director, to distribute one hundred thousand vines to farmers in the area.

About 1000 farmers who are willing and able to plant the potatoes are expected to benefit.

The project is under a UN world food program which is situated at Kiape a sub Village under Bole district. Over 50 women are also working and receiving benefits in diverse ways under the project.
