Boat Disaster on Volta Lake: 6 rescued, others feared dead

Six individuals have been rescued while several others are feared dead after a boat carrying displaced residents capsized on the Black Volta at Dinie Tuonbo in the Savannah Region.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the victims were attempting to cross the river when the tragedy occurred.

“Personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other security agencies have since deployed a rescue team to the area to search for survivors and retrieve bodies,” the report noted.

The incident comes in the wake of recent violent clashes at Gbinyiri, a farming community in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, where six people were killed and 18 others sustained injuries.

The clashes reportedly began after the Chief of Gbinyiri sold a small piece of land to a resident. Subsequently, another man emerged claiming ownership of the same parcel, sparking a violent confrontation.

As a result, hundreds of residents, including women and children, have been displaced.

The Ghana Police Service has since intensified security operations in Sawla, Gbiniyiri, Giniri, and nearby communities following the communal clashes.
