Ghana-South Africa Military ties be strengthened

Tema, Sept. 21, GNA -- Captain J.J. Schutte, Officer Commanding SAS MENDI, a South African Naval Vessel, on Friday, stressed the need for his country and Ghana to strengthen the joint military co-operation between the two countries.

At a Press Conference at the Tema Harbour where the ship berthed this morning from Brazil, Capt. Schutte said the military exchange programmes would lead to the further strengthening of friendship bonds between Ghana and South Africa.

Mr Rapu Molekane, South Africa's High Commissioner in Ghana, expressed the hope that the existing cordial relations between his country and Ghana would be cemented for the mutual benefit of the citizenry of the two nations.

The vessel was named after the original SS MENDI, a troop ship that sank during the First World War.

With a 141-member crew on board, SAS MENDI returns home on Sunday.
