Banks in Ho under pressure

Ho, June 30, GNA - Banks in Ho may have to work overtime to ensure that as many public sector workers are paid their salaries before the long weekend starting from Friday, Republic day. This followed what seemed to be a delay in the payment of June salaries.

By mid-day on Thursday long queues of expectant public servants were still formed in banking halls and Automatic Teller Machines (ATM) payment points.

One of the major banks visited by the GNA has deployed more payment points to be able to deal with the pressure. As early as 0700 hours, long queues were formed at the main branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank, a security man there told the GNA.

He said customers with the ATM cards started visiting the ATM machine as early as 0400 hours.

Mr Anthony Dovi, a civil servant, said he was relieved that the Banks were finally paying the salaries.

A Bank official at Zenith Bank who sought anonymity said though they were having some pressure from customers that was understandable. Until today many workers had been in a fix as to when they were going to be paid their June salaries.

They had been calling at the banks since Monday in anticipation of withdrawing their salaries but had to leave in disappointment.
