Residents of Atwima Asamang in the Atwima Mponua District of Ghana's Ashanti Region are expressing frustration over the abandonment of a community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound.

The project, which was started in 2014 under the then John Mahama administration, has been left unfinished for 10 years.

The CHPS compound is 80% complete, with only electricity installation, door and window fitting, septic tank construction, washroom completion and logistics for staff remaining.

The abandoned facility is affecting not only the people of Atwima Asamang but also about 10 other communities in the Abesua electoral area.

Some residents contend that the absence of a healthcare facility in the area has resulted in many fatalities.

They explained that when a community member falls ill, they have to be carried on a motorbike to Siribuoso to access a vehicle since their road is also in a deplorable state, which makes it difficult for vehicles to ply, which then transports them to other health facilities in Toase and Mpasatia for minor cases and Nkawie for major cases.

They are arguing that since the NDC government initiated the project and is currently in power, they should finish it for them after the NPP government abandoned it for 8 years.

In order to improve health care delivery in the area, the residents have fervently urged the government, through the District Chief Executive for Atwima Mponua, Ibrahim Issahak, Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene and Minister of Health, Kwabena Minta Akandoh, to expeditiously finish and inaugurate an 80 percent completed CHPS compound.

An opinion leader and Unit Committee Member, Kofi Akakpo, revealed that Unit Committee Members together with their Assembly Member have written to the District Assembly to ensure the project's completion but have yet to receive a response.

He claims that in order to enhance healthcare delivery in the vicinity, they are still working to make sure that the CHPS compound project is wrapped up.
