Assembly inaugurates two schools at Anyinam and Asonkore

Obuasi, Sept 28, GNA - The Obuasi Municipal Assembly (OMA) has inaugurated a GH¢127,000 classroom block at Anyinam, a suburb of Obuasi, to end years of running shift at the Anyinam Methodist Primary School. The project has six classrooms, office, store, staff common room and a library.

Earlier, the Assembly had commissioned a three-classroom block, office, store and staff common room at Asonkore to start the running of the first public basic school in the area. Speaking at both ceremonies, Mr John Alexander Kobina Ackon, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said the performance of the Obuasi schools in Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) meant that all efforts must be done to protect the future of children of the municipality.

Accordingly, he said the Assembly had reviewed its bye-laws to give prominence to the ban on school children from operating video games during school hours. Mr Ackon said the Assembly was committed to teacher motivation, hence the organisation of the 2008 and 2009 best teacher award ceremonies.

He said the Assembly was keen on the promotion of education that was why the bulk of its budget was channelled to that sector. Mr Johnny Owusu-Boadi, the Municipal Director of Education, urged the communities to ensure that all children of school-going age were enrolled and retained in the schools to derive the maximum benefit from the investment made by the Assembly. The Assembly member for Anyinam, Mr Lawrence Nana Bondah Obeng, commended the Municipal Chief Executive for the project and further appealed to him for the rehabilitation of the Anyinam Methodist Primary 'B' block which was in a bad state. He also appealed for the construction of a urinal and toilet facilities for the new block, as well as the extension of the school feeding programme to the schools.
