Asiedu Nketia: NDC still grappling with FONKAR, GAME divisions

The reelected General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress Johnson Asiedu Nketia has said the party is still “grappling” with the divisions that engulfed it during the 2010 midterm presidential primaries between the late President Mills and former First lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.

Nketia told delegates at the 8th Congress of the party held in Kumasi in the Ashanti region, Saturday December 20 that the party is yet-to-recover from the FONKAR/GAME rivalry.

Both FONKAR- Friends of Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings and GAME- Get Atta Mills endorsed- emerged out of the ruling party to canvass votes for either of the two candidates in an epic midterm presidential primaries in 2010.

Deputy Ashanti regional minister Joseph Yammin had hinted ahead of the party’s congress to elect new national executives that several of the newly elected regional executives were members of FONKAR, creating the impression that the factions still exist in the party.

Addressing delegates at the Congress, Nketia who retained his seat with over 90 percent of the valid vote cast said the ruling party is still nursing wounds created by the internal rivalry years ago.

Close to 4,000 delegates of the party participated in the vote that saw the election of a new national chairman, organiser among other.
