Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has denied allegations that he assured residents of Tontokrom that security forces stationed at the Asanko Mines would be withdrawn.

His response follows the circulation of a viral video in which a youth leader from the community alleged the minister made such a promise during a recent engagement.

Speaking to the media, Dr Amoakohene described the claim as false and misleading, cautioning the public against spreading unverified information that could heighten tensions.

He emphasized that the presence of security personnel remains essential to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property.

“There is no directive to withdraw the military or police. We need them to maintain peace and protect lives and property while we work on resolving the issue,” he stated.

The minister urged the youth to remain calm and allow the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to engage all stakeholders involved in the dispute.

He acknowledged the growing unrest in Tontokrom, where confrontations between community members and military personnel have flared around the mining concession.

To help de-escalate tensions, Dr Amoakohene announced a stakeholder meeting involving the Regional Coordinating Council and officials from Asanko Mines, aimed at collecting viewpoints and seeking a long-term resolution.

He also disclosed that the Minerals Commission would be consulted to verify the legitimacy of Asanko Mines’ operations.

“If it is confirmed that the concession indeed belongs to Asanko Mines, there will be very little the government can do in terms of reclaiming the land for the youth,” he explained.

The minister assured that the government would encourage the company to provide alternative livelihood support or employment opportunities for the affected youth.

Dr Amoakohene reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and due process, stressing that dialogue, not confrontation is the way forward.
