In the wake of the fatal shooting of Sampson Darkwa, the Assembly Member for Mpatoam-Aboabo electoral area, frustrated youth in the area are demanding immediate justice for their deceased representative.
According to reports, the assembly member was killed by military personnel deployed by the Asanko Mining Company, allegedly without cause.
The youth claim that Darkwa had been attempting to mediate and calm a group of community members who were protesting the earlier killing of another local youth, also at the hands of the same military personnel.
Instead, the assemblyman became a target.
"We are tired of these killings of innocent residents in the Manso area by the Asanko Mining Company," stated one of the angry youths.
"We are pleading with President John Dramani to immediately intervene to ensure our safety. Are these mining companies only here to extract gold from our lands and make us targets of senseless killings?"
The youth expressed their growing frustration with the ongoing killings of community members, reportedly by Asanko Mining Company and its associated military personnel.
"We may be compelled to turn our area into a Liberia-like war zone if this injustice continues," they warned. They said this in an interview with Kwame Wiredu after they had stormed the Afari Hospital Morgue to deposit the dead body of the Assembly member.
On this same issue, Richard Kofi Agyemang who is the assembly member for the Essuowin electoral area has expressed deep sorrow and called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
He also appealed to President John Dramani Mahama's government to ensure justice is served.
"This morning, upon hearing of a developing situation in his area, I attempted to reach Sampson Darkwa," stated Agyemang.
"I called him six times but unfortunately, he did not answer."
He subsequently contacted another Member of Parliament in the area, who confirmed the devastating news of Darkwa's death.
According to the source, the shooting occurred amid a dispute between the community and military personnel associated with the Asanko Mining Company.
The community was reportedly protesting the earlier killing of a local youth by the same military personnel.
Darkwa, seeking to de-escalate the situation, was tragically shot by the military personnel without apparent justification.
"The most concerning aspect of this situation is that the community does not have any existing grievances with Asanko Mining," Agyemang emphasized.
"The killings have become excessive and it's deeply unfortunate."
"Agyemang expressed his plea to the President and the government, saying, "We are pleading with President John Dramani Mahama and his government to ensure that proper measures are taken, and justice is served."
