Akyempim community gets mechanized water system

Golden Star Wassa Limited (GSWL) has provided the people of Ayempim Mporhor Wassa East District with a mechanised water system as part of measures to ease the perennial water crisis and prevent the use of unsafe water.

This is in fulfilment of an agreement reached in June last year between the leaders of the Akyempim community and representatives of GSWL.

Inaugurating the facility in addition to a community centre the General Manager of GSWL, Mr. Ken Stein, said $220,000 was spent on the projects and the company has targeted to invest $800,000rs between 2010 -2013 on water and sanitation.

GSWL has projected to use $750,000 in 13 projects and these include two community centres, three bole holes and three mechanized water projects this year.

Ten of those projects have been completed and 44 youth from the company’s three sites had received skills in mining, mine maintenance, safety and other mine related skills.

He thanked the people who had worked to ensure good collaboration and peaceful co-existence between the people of Akyempim and GSWL.

He appealed to parents to take the education of their children seriously to enable them take up employment opportunities in the mine.

The company donated 200 pieces of plastic chairs to the community.

The chief of Brofoyedro, Nana Kwamena Damoah III, expressed appreciation for the facility and appealed to those who had been selected to manage it to do a good job.
