Akwante appeals to GES re-open school

Akwante (ER), Oct. 6, GNA - The chief and people of Akwante, a farming community in the Kwaebibirem District, on Wednesday appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to re-open the L/A primary school it closed down in 2001.

The appeal was made by the chief of the village, Nana Owusu Boadu and a former district assembly member for the area, Mr Raymond Darko, when Mr Ofosu Asamoah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kade paid a visit to the community as part of a tour of the constituency. They said GES closed down the school because it said the enrolment rate was too small, but the chief and the former assemblyman, explained that since then the population of school going children had increased. They said due to the closure, children in the village now trek a distance of over 10 kilometers to and from Tweapease and Larbikrom to attend school.

They said some of the children, who could not make the journey, were idling at home.

The MP sympathized with them promised to get the GES to re-open the school at least for the lower primary children, who were too young to make the journey to attend school elsewhere outside the village. Mr Asamoah presented a 21-inch television set, four street light lamps and a set of football jerseys to the village. He said Akwante and neighbouring Odumase Nkwanta II, where he also visited, were also presented with similar items.

The MP promised to donate mist blower spraying machines to help farmers in the area to spray their cocoa farms. Odikro Boadu thanked the MP for his assistance and promised that he and his people would undertake communal labour to improve their community. 6 Oct. 10
