Akuapem chiefs pledge support for NSD

The Akuapem Traditional Council, has hailed the National Sanitation Day (NSD) campaign and pledged its full support to participate in the fifth edition, being hosted by Eastern Region on Saturday, April 4.

Nana Addo-Dankwa, Okuapehene who spoke on behalf of the chiefs, said sanitation is everybody’s business and therefore the Akuapem State led by the traditional authorities would mobilise the people to support the exercise.

He was speaking at a durbar of the chiefs and people including all the divisional chiefs of the Akuapem State at Akropong, when a team from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development led by the Deputy Regional Minister, Ms Mavis Frimpong, called on him to inform them of the exercise and requested for their support.

He thanked the Ministry for recognising the role of chiefs in national development especially in the area of sanitation and expressed the hope that, every citizen of Akuapem would get involved in the exercise..

The team visited the Akuapem South District Assembly and also called on the Aburihene and Adontenhene of the Akuapem Traditional Area, Nana Otubuor Djan Kwasi, who commended the initiation of the NSD.

The Aburihene noted that, sanitation is a matter of survival and described.

Otubuor Djan Kwasi said it is “a national shame” that government is leading a crusade on sanitation and gave the assurance that he would lead his people to participate in the exercise.

He noted that, sanitation has impact on tourism and indicated that, with the location of Aburi and its tourist attractions, good sanitation is imperative and thanked the Ministry for recognising the role of chiefs in facilitating the effort.
