Airtel commissions Library and ICT centre for La Wireless Cluster of Schools

Airtel Ghana, Best CSR Company for Education and Community Relations has commissioned a multipurpose state of the art Library and ICT centre for the La Wireless Cluster of Schools.

The project under the company’s ‘School Adoption Programme’ of which is expected to improve teaching and learning especially in the area of ICT with the provision of computers fully connected to the internet. Through the Schools Adoption Programme, Airtel Ghana works closely with key stakeholders including community leadership, Municipal and District Assemblies to make quality education accessible to deprived communities across the country.

Since its inception, schools such as Himankrom Methodist Primary School and Adaklu Salvation Army Primary School in the Western and Volta Regions respectively have benefitted from infrastructure development and capacity building of teachers to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the beneficiary schools.

Speaking at the event, Hannah Agbozo, Legal and Corporate Affairs Director at Airtel Ghana said, “At Airtel, we passionately believe in the power of potential – that each and every one has the inherent potential to be the best they can be given the right environment, support system, education and self-belief”.

She continued, “As the fastest growing telecommunications network in a technology driven industry, it is worthwhile to pair education with ICT to drive innovation required for a better society. In view of this, we have over the years invested in ICT centres, libraries, and classroom blocks, such as this facility we are commissioning today, to empower young people to fully realise their potential.

Quite recently, we launched the Evolve with STEM initiative to inspire belief and transform mindsets of young people towards the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics because we believe that these subjects are empowering, inculcates problem solving in young people and prepares them for any future career path they choose to pursue. Furtherance to this, the investment at the La Wireless Cluster of Schools is a demonstration of our commitment to support education and truly empower young people with the requisite skills to excel in our technology driven society”.

For her part, La Dadekotopon MCE, Hon. Rita Odoley Sowah commended Airtel Ghana for its commitment to educational development in the country, adding, “You have proven by your commitment that you [Airtel] are a worthy ally in community development, education and in empowering young people through the many initiatives you support. On behalf of the parents, teaching body and the students of this cluster we want to say a big thank you for investing in this multipurpose facility that will definitely impact the lives of the thousands of students who will pass through this institution”.

Airtel Ghana has over the years gained recognition for its role in the promotion and improvement of education and infrastructural developments across the country as the Best CSR Company of the Year for Education by Ghana CR Excellence Awards. The company’s flagship CSR programme- Airtel Touching Lives has also won CIMG TV Programme of the Year, IPR Best Community Programme of the Year on three consecutive occasions and Bharti Change Marker Award (Gold Category) in 2014 and 2015.
