Agona Assembly/RCC plant tress to mark Environmental Day

Agona Swedru, June 25, GNA - The Agona District Assembly in collaboration with the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have planted 1000 tree species at the Agona Swedru Sacred Groove. They also planted trees at the entrance and exit roads of Agona Kwanyako to mark the Regional World Environmental Day celebration. Agricultural and Rural Development (ARA) and Together Rural Development and Solidarity both non-governmental organisation (NGO) based at Agona Swedru supplied the trees. The exercise also marked the inauguration of a 21-Member Planning Committee for the celebration of the World Environmental Day scheduled for Agona Swedru on July 14,2005.

Mr Guy Bobson Lee Siilo, Agona District Coordinating Director urged the organisations and groups in the area to plant more trees to avert future disaster. He stated that when disaster occurred the District Assembly and the government struggled to cope with the situation to resettle victims. The District Co-ordinating Director cautioned the people to keep their environment clean at all times to avoid communicable diseases. Mr Siilo said the planting of the trees should not be a nine-day wonder but made a permanent feature to salvage the ecology from further depletion. He stated that the Assembly would do everything possible to assist groups and organisations to plant trees at strategic places.
