Some traders at the Agomanya market in the Eastern Region will now heave a sigh of respite following the completion of three sheds and seventy-two stores in the market.

The newly constructed facility awaiting official handover to the traders is expected to ease the inconveniences endured by the traders who have been forced to ply their trade under difficult circumstances over the years.

The Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly through its share of the one million dollars per constituency program completed the first phase of construction of the stalls whose construction began in November 2019.

Contractors of the project, Grand Savanna upon completion of the project, handed it over to the local Assembly for allocation to the traders who were displaced from the site to pave way for the construction of the project.

Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Simon Kweku Tetteh said the market with its status as one of the oldest in the country deserved better than its present situation.

According to him, the NPP government was determined to provide the necessary relief to the traders and market women to relieve them from the current circumstances under which they operated.

“The Agomanya market is one of the oldest markets and this should not have been its present state and the government being an infrastructure oriented one, decided to give it a facelift,” the MCE said in an interview. “This facility will shield the women from the scorching sun and rains and they will feel comfortable.”

With the observance of social distance being a major challenge in the market during the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Assembly Chief said the construction of the sheds will by itself enforce the protocol.

In the second phase of the project, Mr. Simon Tetteh disclosed will also see the construction of 188 lockable sheds in the market.

The tiled sheds are fitted with other facilities including storage facilities, washrooms, and a mechanized borehole.
