Adullam Orphanage venture into poultry farming

Obuasi, May 04, GNA - The management of Adullam Orphanage at Obuasi has ventured into poultry farming with an initial stock of 2,000 layers. The venture is not only to generate funds to support operations of the orphanage, but to help improve nutritional value of the inmates. Currently, the orphanage, which has Reverend Mrs Louis Timothy as Founder and Executive Director, has 182 orphans, abandoned and destitute children.

Mr Peter Ukah Beidu, General Manager of the Orphanage announced these when Ghana News Agency visited the poultry farm. He said initially the birds were 4,000 but had to be reduced because of feeding problems.

Mr Beidu said in addition to the poultry, the Orphanage had over 100 rabbits even though it started with 14 rabbits. "The idea is to put one male to five females in one cubicle to be able to have more rabbits to help feed the orphans in the orphanage," He said.

The orphanage also has two grass-cutters, six turkeys and two rams. Mr Beidu said they had secured a six-acre land at Obuasi-Nkanprom for vegetable farming.

He said in addition to the establishment of a basic school, the orphanage had established the first deaf and dumb school at Obuasi with 18 children. "There is great improvement at the orphanage," the general manager said. 04 May 06
