Adebayor provides boreholes to communities in Upper West

Wa, June 23, GNA - Togolese football star, Emmanuel Adebayor has provided two boreholes for Hamile and Koro communities in the Lambussie-Karni District of the Upper West Region.

The projects solely funded by the Real Madrid Striker at a cost of GH¢15,000, would help reduce the routine man-hours lost in search of water by women and children and also the incidents of water-borne diseases among community members.

Mr Caesar Kale, Deputy Upper West Regional Minister said this during the commissioning of the boreholes at Hamile, which has been experiencing water shortage.

The plight of women and children, who have to spend several hours in search of water from unsafe water sources touched the donor to provide the two communities with portable water.

Mr Kale noted that safe water was life and wealth, because they save man-hours and money used for the treatment of water-borne related diseases, which would now be channelled to productive ventures by the people.

He said the life history of the Togolese international star should motivate the youth to aspire to greater heights.

He asked the Lambussie-Karni District Assembly to put in place a Water Board to ensure that the facilities were maintained.

Mr Kale noted that the projects would also inch the country towards achieving the Millennium Development Goal by 2015.

The Deputy Minister said the projects brought to the fore that, Africans were one and the same people with a common goal and destiny, pointing out that, what affected the neighbour should be of equal concern to all.

The intervention of the footballer should therefore be emulated by others because government alone could not do it all.

Mr Clement B. Benin, Lambussie-Karni District Chief Executive noted that the inadequate access to portable water had a major impact on the people, especially the girl-child.

Girls were forced to spend greater parts of their time in search of water and as such were unable to attend school.

As a result the girl-child in those communities were being marginalized in terms of education and socio-economic opportunities.

Mr Benin said the intervention of the Togolese Star to complement government's efforts was praise worthy.

"It is a great honour that has been bestowed on the people of Hamile and Koro and the people of these communities will never forget this kind gesture," Mr Benin acknowledged.

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mr Kwesi Nyantekyi, who graced the occasion, said the provision of portable water would improve the lives of the youth in the area and that the presence of the Togolese Star would also encourage the youth to emulate him because they see him as role-model.
