Adansi West DISEC suspends political parties keep-fit

Obuasi (Ash), April 25, GNA - The Adansi West District Security Committee (DISEC) has with immediate effect placed an embargo on the conduct of morning keep-fit exercises in the Obuasi township by all political parties after an emergency meeting last Friday.

The ban formed part of arrangements to bring sanity and foster political tolerance in the conduct of the keep-fit exercises, especially by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the township.

A release signed by Mr M.K. Addai, District Co-ordinating Director and copied to the Obuasi constituency chairmen of the NDC and NPP, the DISEC said the suspension had become imperative due to an impasse arising out of the planning, programming and execution of the keep-fit exercises on the streets of Obuasi.

The release said another DISEC meeting with representatives of the various political parties would be called on May 7 to work out suitable modalities for the conduct of the exercise to ensure peace and tranquillity among the political parties.

It urged the parties to co-operate to promote political tolerance, peace, stability and understanding in the area.

The GNA investigations revealed that the suspension of the keep-fit exercises was necessitated by a recent clash between supporters of NDC and NPP during one of such keep-fit exercises on the streets of Obuasi. Though there were no casualties, eyewitnesses described the incident as unfortunate and unhealthy and commended the DISEC for its action.
