Adam Amandi Laid to Rest

Bawku (U/E), Feb. 23, GNA - Burial took place at Bawku on Thursday of the late Mr Adam Amandi, a leading member of the Danquah-Busia tradition, who died on Tuesday after a short illness. He was 92.

Present at the ceremony was a seven-member government delegation led by Mr Joseph Kofi Adda, Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central and Minister of Employment and Manpower Development.

Other members of the delegation were Mr Stephen Mac Manu, National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Abraham Dwomoh, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development and Mr Issah Ketekewu, Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing. The rest were Mr Mahami Salifu, former Upper East Regional Minister, Madam Rita Asobayire, National Women's Organiser of the NPP and Mr Ahmed Arimiyawu, Special Assistant to the Vice President. Also present was Alhaji Awudu Yiremeah, Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Alhaji Abdulai Bawah, Regional Chairman of the NPP, Alhaji Sule Yiremeah, Deputy National Co-ordinator of NADMO, and District Chief Executives from the Region.

A political stalwart of the "Old School", the late Adam Amandi was a member of the Legislative Assembly in the pre-independence era. He was also a founding member of the Northern People's Party (NPP), and later became a Minister of State in the erstwhile Progress Party government between 1969 and 1972.

A wife, 14 children and 23 grandchildren survive him. A family spokesman made it known that the traditional Muslim seventh day funeral rites for the late Mr Amandi would be held on Thursday March 2, 2006.
