Accra Girls SHS marks 50th anniversary with a walk

Accra, June 26, GNA - Accra Girls Senior High Senior School (AGISS) on Saturday organised a walk through some principal streets of Accra, as part of its 50th anniversary celebration. The four-hour event, which attracted former students of the school, was under the under the theme: "Sustaining Quality Girl-Child Education. 50 Years and Beyond".

Madam Veronica Akapame, Headmistress of AGISS, in an interview with GNA after the walk, said that the school had played a significant role in the training of the girl-child towards national development. She said "The school since its inception 50 years ago has churned out a lot of influential women who are contributing their quota towards the development of this country".

Madam Akapame said that the school had achieved high level discipline and academic success. She cited inadequate library, classrooms and dormitories, insufficient computers, irregular water supply as some of the challenging facing the school and called on individuals and organisations to come to the aid of the school. "The old girls association and the Parents Teacher Association are doing their best but like Oliver Twist, we are asking for more since there is more to be done," she added.

Madam Joyce Oku, Acting President of Accra Girls Old Students Association said variety show, home coming, speech day, talk show fun fairs, clean up campaigns, home coming for old girls would form part of the year-long celebration which would end on 31st October 2010. She praised the old girls for their support for the school and appealed to them to show more interest in the development of the educational institution.
