Abesim water headworks to pump more water

Abesim (B/A) May 28, GNA - The government is sourcing 92 million dollars concessional credit facility from the United States government to undertake expansion works at Abesim Water Headworks to improve the distribution of water in Sunyani Municipality and environs. Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Boniface, Minister of Works and Housing who disclosed this on Wednesday said the facility would comprise 62 million dollars commercial credit and the rest in soft grants. The Minister, accompanied by Mr. Y. Addae-Mensah, Regional Chief Manager of Aqua Vitens Rand Limited of Ghana Water Company Limited was on a day's working visit to Abesim Headworks.

He explained that a proposal on the project had already been submitted to the Cabinet for consideration and approval, after which it would be presented to Parliament for consideration. Mr. Saddique said the current 1.4 million gallons of water a day pumped at the headworks would increase to about 9.68 million gallons by the year 2030 after the expansion works. "Soon Sunyani municipality would have a modern treatment plant and there will be improvement in the water situation", he added. The Minister said Berekum had also been short-listed to benefit from the project.

He appealed to consumers to ensure the judicious use of water and avoid wasting water, saying; "water has become an essential economic commodity these days". 28 May 08
