AMA fulfills mandate to PWDs

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has fulfilled its mandate of using two per cent of its share of the common fund to support activities of Persons Living With Disability (PWDs).

Mr Sam Aryeh Dartey, Co-ordinating Director of the AMA, made this known when he handed over cheques to the PWDs at a ceremony in Accra.

The amount disbursed ranges from 1,000 Ghana cedis to 2,500 Ghana cedis depending on the kind of businesses being undertaken.

“This is the tenth batch of disbursement to support the businesses, school fees and other bills of PWDs in fulfillment of the Disability Fund Act 175 to alleviate poverty.”

Mr Dartey said the law required that every assembly set aside two per cent of its share of the District Assemblies Common Fund to support activities of the PWDs to improve their lives.

He gave the assurance that the AMA would continue with all its social intervention programmes despite the challenges it was facing.

Miss Amanorbea Dodoo, Director in-charge of Programmes at the National Council For PWDs, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the Council had up-scaled its monitoring of the usage of the fund by the beneficiaries.

She said this was to ensure that the PWDs did not spend the monies on other things which they were not meant for.

“So far 52 persons have benefitted from the disability fund under the District Assemblies Common Fund which is meant to help them to go into activities such as education and skill ventures,” Miss Dodoo said.

She encouraged the PWDs to take advantage of the fund and send their applications to the Disability Fund Management Committee of the AMA for consideration.
