7900 register for HIS in Gushegu/Karaga

Karaga (NR), April 27, GNA - About 7,900 people from the informal sector in the Gushegu/Karaga District have registered to benefit from the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Mr Abdulai Yakubu, Gushegu/Karaga District Manager of the Scheme announced this on Tuesday during a People's Assembly held in the newly created Karaga District.

Mr Yakubu said the contribution of the registered persons yielded about 12 million cedis and expressed the hope that the District would meet the government deadline in June.

He said the Identification (ID) Card photo taking exercise would start very soon and appealed to those who have not yet registered to do so to ensure that they were not left out.

As to how rural communities without health facilities would benefit from the Scheme, Mr Yakubu explained that holders of the ID card could attend any other hospitals for attention.

Mr Charles Bintin, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development assured the people of improved infrastructure and pipe borne water to improve their health status.

He said the NHIS was a good substitute to the Cash and Carry system and appealed to the people to register and that plans were far advance to upgrade the Karaga Clinic into a District Hospital.

The Karaga District Director Education and the Deputy Northern Regional Minister Mr Mohammed Amin Adam helped the Local Government Minister to answer questions from the public.
