750 million-cedi school block commissioned at Amanokrom

Amanokrom, (E/R), Sept. 28, GNA - The Vice-President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama on Saturday commissioned an ultra-modern school block at a cost of 750 million-cedi, at Amanokrom Akwapim on Saturday, to improve upon the quality of education in the area.

The school complex named "The Devi Mohinani School Complex," consists of 3 classrooms, a library, a staff common room, a secretary's office, a headmaster's office and modern toilet facilities both for the students and staff.

The Mohinani Family and Poly Group of Companies, producers of plastic and paper packaging solutions, solely funded it in memory of the mother of the Founder of the Company, Devi Mohinani.

The commissioning formed part of activities to mark the climax of this year's Akwapim Gyaaseman Odwria festival, celebrated at Amanokrom Akwapim, in the Eastern Region.

Alhaji Mahama lauded the efforts of the Company and urged other stakeholders as well as Non-Governmental Organisations to emulate their example.

The Chief of Amanokrom, Oyeeman Wereko Ampem II, in his annual traditional Odwira progress report, said the celebration of the festival, which marked the introduction of the new yam, is also used to launch and outdoor development projects.

He announced that the Akwapim Gyaaseman Education Foundation, since its inception in 1996, had provided financial assistance to 240 students from both the Senior Secondary School and Tertiary institutions to the tune of 85 million cedis.

He said this year, 19 senior secondary school students and 5 new tertiary students have also been given financial assistance to continue their education and added that the foundation had also began a scheme of career counselling and guidance for all recipients.

He said so far 25 young farmers have been given 250,000 cedis each as loans from the Agricultural Foundation of the area and hoped to increase it to 500,000 cedis this year.

Oyeeman Wereko Ampem, however, appealed to beneficiaries of the loans to honour their obligation to pay in time to sustain the scheme. He appealed for the construction of a computer centre in the area to help make the pupils computer literates. Sept. 28, 03
