4000 basic schools to observe NCCE week

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) says 4,000 basic schools with an estimated population of one million pupils across the country would be targeted for the 2013 citizenship week celebration.

It said citizenship week activities were being coordinated by all the 216 offices of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) nationwide.

An NCCE document on the celebration made available to the Ghana News Agency by Mrs Joyce Afutu, Director for Public Affairs of the Commission, said the week’s celebration is on the theme: “Advancing Together”.

It said the commission would engage volunteers from academia, business groups, professionals, women groups and the clergy, who would go to schools and interact with the pupils on issues relating to good governance and civic responsibilities.

The document said in 2012, the maiden Citizenship Day was held in 2,000 schools throughout the country, adding that volunteers generally interacted with the pupils on democratic values such as duties of a citizen, and the need to uphold democratic governance.

It said message on good citizenship include: a good citizen is faithful and loyal to Ghana our motherland; a good citizen obeys the law; a good citizen respects the rights of other people; among others.

Citizenship Day aims at inculcating the spirit of quality citizenship in pupils and further reminds them of the sweat and toil of the fore-fathers in the struggle for the nation, and the role they (pupils) can play to strengthen constitutional democracy.

It said the Commission used mentorship approach as a strategy for delivering the Citizenship Day talks.
