40 commercial drivers undergo training in Tema

Tema, Jan. 14, GNA - The National Road Safety Commission in conjunction with IMAS Limited, a road safety consultancy firm, has organised a three-day training workshop for 40 commercial drivers in the Tema municipality to upgrade their knowledge, skills and capability in their profession.

With sponsorship from the World Bank, the programme, which is being held countrywide is one of the programmes put in place to reduce commercial driver- road-accident by 20 per cent by the end of the year. The drivers were taken through various topics including vehicle maintenance, management, identification of road signs, interpretation and how to react to them on the roads as well as defensive driving techniques.

The course consultant of IMAS Limited, Mr Ekow Wilson-Asaam briefing the press at the closing, said the programme for Tema will end next week with a second batch of 40 commercial drivers.

He said the programme, which started last year has almost covered the whole country and over 500 drivers are expected to be trained at the end of it.

He was confident that, it was achieving its aim, considering the number of road accidents that occurred during the Christmas festivities as compared to that of the previous years.

He however, regretted that due to logistics the programme could not cover all drivers and hoped those who have had the opportunity would go and impart the knowledge they have acquired to the others. He also urged leaders of the various transport unions to at least spare some of their meeting times to brief others and deliberate on what have been treated.

The drivers shared their experiences on the road and made confessions on some of the bad habits they have exhibited on the road and promised to make good use of the knowledge acquired. 14 Jan. 05
