The second-largest fishing boat in Elmina in the Central Region has sunk due to what the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has identified as operator error.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh, citing the GMA, the error resulted from speeding and loss of control, leading to a crash on Monday, August 18, 2025.

The authority stated that contrary to initial reports, no fatalities were recorded, as all 27 crew members and fishers aboard the boat survived the crash.

Preliminary investigations found that the boat collided with a sea defense structure at the wharf entrance shortly after departing from the Elmina Fishing Harbour.

The crew members managed to swim safely to shore, sustaining only minor bruises.

The boat, which was damaged in the collision, took on water and sank during an attempt by its owners to tow it to safety.

The incident resulted in the loss of fishing gear that was onboard the vessel.

The report noted that as of Thursday, August 21, 2025, the vessel's owners had engaged a crane to recover the wreck.

In its statement, the GMA noted that its investigation into the incident will seek to uncover the cause of the collision, the operator’s licensing, compliance with speed limits, and broader safety issues.

“The Ghana Maritime Authority treats all marine incidents with the utmost seriousness. While we are thankful that no lives were lost, we remain concerned about the spread of unverified reports that cause needless fear and distress,” the statement said.
