A 19-year-old has met his untimely death in an abandoned mining pit at Yaw Nkwanta near Mpasatia in Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region

The deceased, identified as Philemon Okofor Ahene, died on November 18,2025, around 2:30pm.

According to reports, Philemon had accompanied two colleagues to an illegal mining site in the area when the incident occurred.

While details remain unclear, the lifeless body of the deceased has been retrieved and deposited at the Frimpong Boateng mortuary

Toase police have commenced investigation into the incident.

However, the heartbroken family expressed suspicions of foul play, citing inconsistencies in the accounts of how their son died.

The tragic event has rekindled worries about the risks associated with unregulated and abandoned galamsey pits across the country.
